Meeting
at the Sea-port & 6h
(up to 8h) Sevastopol City & Balaklava Tour
(car
& English-speaking guide. Admission tickets - about $15/person
totally)
We
start our tour at the central square of Sevastopol - the Admiral
Nakhimov Square named after the
famous admiral, who participated
in the Synope and Navarino battles, the hero and the main leader of
the Crimean war of 1854-1855. A 6-meter bronze figure of the admiral
is facing the central part of the city and the open sea, and
symbolizes the courage and military valor of the Russian fleet. Then
we
take you to a town
of Balaklava (1h
round trip). And
on the way to Balaklava we stop at the Sapun
mountain
(30-40 min) to
explore the World War II museum (with real Soviet and German weapons
& equipment). From this position we can watch magnificent view
to the Northern part of Balaklava Valley (Valley
of Death)
where The Charge of the Light Brigade took place.
For
the next 2-3
hours we’ll explore an ancient city on the bay - Balaklava.
Founded
by the
Ancient Greeks more than 2500 years ago and developed by Romans
during the Middle Ages, this town has a lot to offer for those who
love ancient and modern history. We
explore the ruins
of the Genoese fortress (30 min
–
1h.30 min)
positioned high on a cliff top above the entrance to the Balaklava
Inlet, and go down to the famous Submarine tunnel (1h. 30 min) to
review exhibitions of the Sheremetiev’s museum (history
of the Crimean War) and and/or Balaklava
Naval Museum complex.
The underground base built in the 1950s,
covered 5100 square meters and was designed for the simultaneous
repair and maintenance of 7 submarines. It could shelter 3000 people
in case of attack and could operate autonomously for 3 years! This
unique classified facility was guarded so carefully under Soviet
rule that the whole city became a “secret” and disappeared from
the world map during the Cold War.
From
Balaklava we drive back to Sevastopol to the world-known Panorama-museum
(1h.30
min) devoted
to the first siege of Sevastopol (1854-1855) during the Crimean War
(1853-1856). You'll see the only one Panorama in Ukraine, which is
the battle painting on the canvas (115 m long, 14 m high), which is
not only the canvas but the object plan. The panorama building is
situated on one of the Sevastopol highs where nowadays military
fortifications of the Crimean War period are being exposed. And
together we explore artillery yards with old Russian cannons and
make great photos of Sevastopol naval base located below the hill.
Then
we take you to the
Chersonese
(part
of Sevastopol now), an ancient Greek city with 2000 years of history
behind it.
The remains of the city occupy a
space about two-thirds of a mile long by half a mile broad. For
2 hours we explore the ruins of ancient Chersonese - now the
historical museum of ancient Greek city-colony of the 6th century
BC, as well as remains of Byzantine
churches of 12th-14th centuries.
And
at the end of the tour
we
return back to the
Central square of Sevastopol and walk along a uniquely
picturesque embankment
(30 min), with many historical monuments all around. We enjoy the
view of Sevastopol harbor
and make photos in front of the monument
to the Scuttled Ships which symbolizes the courage and glory of
the heroic city of Sevastopol.
